Walk into a shed anywhere across southern Saskatchewan this August and there’s a fair chance last year’s lentils are still around. The Western Producer reported this summer that Canadian farmers seeded close to a million fewer pulse acres than they did in 2025, and even after that pullback, analysts expect lentil carryout to remain burdensome at roughly a million tonnes by the end of 2026-27. Country Guide pegged 2025-26 ending stocks near 1.57 million tonnes, close to triple the previous year.
Almost all of that volume is sitting in bins, which is generally where it belongs. Bins handle bulk pulse storage better than anything else on the yard. But grain bags do their work at the edges of that operation, and the edges are where grade often gets won or lost. Seed lots heading out the driveway, product packed to an export buyer’s specs, totes moving a crop to the processing plant, or overflow when bins are full and a new crop is coming off the combine. Wheat is quite forgiving. You can auger it, drop it, move it four times, and it reaches the elevator looking about the same as it did leaving the combine.

Every movement or transfer is one more chance to chip something that was perfectly whole an hour ago, which is important given that a sample gets downgraded once cracked seed coats or split seeds turn up. Fewer trips through equipment means fewer broken pieces in the sample, and a sample that can remain clean is a sample that keeps its grade.

UV resistance is built right into our material. We wouldn’t suggest leaving filled bags baking in the yard all summer, but these hold their strength well through sun exposure far better than most alternatives, so a few days on a trailer or a week under an open lean-to won’t leave you with brittle fabric and split seams.

That discharge spout is helpful in emptying a tote of lentils through a proper spout into a hopper is a slow, controlled pour that keeps the seed intact. Cutting a bag open and dumping it is how you end up with split pieces in a sample that graded fine on the way in.
Food-Grade Materials and the FDA Myth
Export buyers ask about food-grade totes constantly, so let’s clear up something:
FDA-approved bulk bags don’t exist. The United States FDA doesn’t approve, regulate, or certify bulk tote bags, so any supplier advertising an “FDA-approved FIBC” is selling you a phrase with nothing behind it. What exists, and what we can supply, are bulk bags manufactured with food-grade materials and food-grade processes. If your buyer’s contract calls for it, that’s the language to use, and that’s the conversation to have with us before you order! Baffles are worth understandin too. Standard totes bulge when filled, which wastes floor space and makes for an unstable stack. Baffled bags hold their square profile, fit standard pallets well, and pack more product into the same shed footprint. We supply our 42×42×52 with baffles on request.
Chickpeas Deserve Extra Care
Chickpeas are the one pulse still gaining ground. Statistics Canada figures put the 2025-26 chickpea crop at 481,589 tonnes, the largest ever grown in this country, and most of it comes off Saskatchewan ground.
They’re also the fussiest pulse to package. Chickpeas carry a small beak attached to the seed coat that snaps off under rough handling, their irregular shape means they don’t flow like a lentil, and Kabuli types start shrinking away from the seed coat as they dry. Growing chickpeas means designing your packaging around fewer transfers: wide-mouth polywoven bags that fill in one pass, or totes that discharge through a controlled spout.
